ABOUT

Born in 1990 in Quebec City, Mireille R. Champagne was passionate about arts and fashion from an early age. After obtaining her DEC in Visual Arts at Cégep de Sainte-Foy and moving to Montreal, the young artist was called by her own ambitions outside of the academic frame. Which pushed her to travel around the globe and experiment as an entrepreneur.

In 2015, she opened a non-profit organization and cultural center named Godberd. After a successful first year building up the NPO, it is with excitement that she leaves her place as Executive Director to work in China as a Model.

A year forward and back in Montreal, she joins the benches of Concordia University in Fine Arts to deepen her visual researches and artistic production. It has always been a challenge for Mireille to balance her career between artistic practice and modeling contracts. It is also this duality that fuels her own visual language. The experiences and encounters that she had during some of these modeling contracts were fundamental to her most significant artwork.

The artist plays around the notion of body image and beauty standards. She reveals her experiences and troubles as a woman and as a model. Often using pictures from her modeling books, she builds strange aesthetic and flashy colors around autoportrait; it is a way for the artist to reappropriate her own image that is been distorted and overused within the canal of publicity and social media.

Mireille is questioning us and herself; how do these aspects affect the perception of our own image? What would be the final conclusion of all these images alterations? What is the valuable use of these “fake” visual alternate universes?
